Austrian economist F.A. Hayek’s most famous work, The Road to Serfdom, is renowned for identifying two general rules in regards to politics and the state. As the title of the book suggests, Hayek was keenly aware of the massive centralization of power taking place during the World War II era as Keynesianism took off and planned economies seemed like the next, natural step in the art of governing. He correctly warned that economic intervention begets further intervention which would eventually lead to totalitarianism.
To reinforce this claim, Hayek explained a truth which haunts all those vying for public office. Because the state, by definition, acts as a monopoly of force and predation, those who seek to brandish its authority don’t always have the most charitable intentions in mind as they clearly prefer an occupation of violence over harmonious enterprise in the private sector. As Hayek writes:
Advancement within a totalitarian group or party depends largely on a willingness to do immoral things. The principle that the end justifies the means, which in individualist ethics is regarded as the denial of all morals, in collectivist ethics becomes necessarily the supreme rule. While Hayek wrote on the mindset one needs to be successful in implementing the state’s various decrees, this type of behavior often spills over into otherwise unrelated government activities. Such delinquency is fostered by the fact that those who operate within the public sector have little regard for the money and privileges designated to them as it is paid for on the backs of taxpayers and not from their own personal funds. One of these embarrassing (for the ruling class, not those forced to support them) moments came to pass recently in Colombia as a few Secret Service personnel, tasked with preparing a summit venue for a visit by President Obama, were caught both soliciting high end call girls and stiffing them after the deed was done. From the National Post:
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Secret Service said Wednesday that three employees will leave their jobs over the sex scandal in a hotel in Colombia which tarnished the elite presidential protection agency’s image.
A total of 11 agents and at least 10 military personnel are being investigated over the incident, which reportedly came to light when a prostitute got into a dispute over payment with one of the agents.
The New York Times on Wednesday carried an interview with one of the prostitutes, who said that the affair came to light after an agent offered her $30 for sex after earlier agreeing to pay $750.By virtue of being a gang of thugs in charge of watching out for one of the biggest bullies in the world, the Secret Service’s reputation has long since been tarnished. There is something to be said when the leader of a supposedly free and friendly country must employ brutes to shakedown visiting tourists at his “place of residence” and designate areas as “non free speech” zones on whim.
Rather than a small security force, the Secret Service has evolved, like all executive government agencies inevitably do, into something far more sinister. Not only can it unilaterally revoke the protection of speech guaranteed by the Constitution, but it has proven to be staffed with those inept and feeling entitled enough to waste the public’s dime on seedy shenanigans.
Hayek, while a brilliant mind, was not right on everything. He saw the welfare state is legitimate, a need for regulation into private industries such as education and food, and the necessity of the state in providing for individual and national defense. Yet even he was able to distinguish how political power attracts those who will use in the worst manner.
The Secret Service agents who procured prostitutes may be relieved of their duty but it will only serve as a cautionary tale for the rest to keep their off-duty exploits better concealed in the future. The waste and graft will go on despite a pledge from Obama for a “rigorous” probe and his potential successor’s promise to “clean house.” These promises are just political theater used to conceal the playground like mentality which possesses the attitudes of all those who wield the guns of the state.

COLOMBIA not Columbia.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with Americans abroad is their arrogant and pompous ass behaviour as their is no respect for people in other cultures. I have seen it over and over again whereby it makes you sick to even know an American. Their attitude is sickening and disgusting. Americans should stay in their own country and leave other countries alone as each nation has their soverignity and they do not need the Americans to come and be in their country.
ReplyDeleteThis is hilarious. The 'elite' US Secret Service can't even get laid without it blowing up in their face! The epitome of true American incompetence as the end of the empire approaches. Too funny!!!
DeletePerhaps... but we seemed to be hell-bent in the U.S. to turn our culture on its ear to satisfy the proclivities of an immigrant population that move here and then demand that the languange and culture change to accommodate them.
DeleteAmericans are people who believe in personal freedom without violating another's property or freedom. There are very few of them left. US Citizens on the other hand are the people you speak of, and they are growing in numbers rapidly. It is sad. The Americans would leave the US if a new America could be found. America was and is an idea, not a place, and it is on life support at best. Obama doing his best to run Bush's third term, has his hand on the cord and he keeps on pulling. America is about to flat line.
DeleteAnonymous: What does any of this have to do with soliciting a prostitute (other than refusing to pay her the negotiated rate)? I'm sure you have beef with Americans, although how much of it is based on assumptions is anyone's guess. If you are so xenophobic as to believe that "each nation has their sovereignty (sic) and they do not need Americans" then why is Cartagena booming from tourism? Should we in America go ahead and take your advice and build our border wall? I know the Latin Americans love that idea...
DeletePeople trash American tourists because they make up the lion's share of tourists in many places. They see the bad because bad is visible and the good passes them by because good is rarely in-your-face like the loud, obnoxious bad.
I agree with the one person speaking about Americans. My wife who is from Colombia told me she had 2 of her friends raped by Americans several years ago and both became pregnant from the rape. One of the ladies was a law student and the other was a medical student in Colombia. The Americans fled back to the U.S. for their safety. Now both women are raising their children under much hardships. The U.S. Government would do nothing.
ReplyDeleteOne thing for certain as I do much negotiating with American Companies and I have learned that any deal with Americans is always a win-lose situation. A win for the American company and a lose for the country they are negotiating with. You may think you are negogoting a win-win scenario, but the Americans always have a hidden agenda. It is sad that this happens, but it does happen. And if the U.S. knows that the country is not going to go along with the deal then the U.S. immediately threatens the country as to say "you will not be able to do any transacting within the U.S. whatsoever or it could be some other type of threat. This happens over and over again. You would think that countries would stand up and refuse to bargain with the U.S. Maybe one day the U.S. will change, but I don't think it will ever happen. It is very sad.
The last post sounds like the negotiating style of Walmart. Am I wrong about that?
ReplyDeleteFrom what little I know of the actual situation, these guys had a verbal contract with these ladies. As I understand it the ladies fulfilled their part while the agents, probably packing heat and probably being significantly bigger than the ladies, refused to fulfill their part. Sounds like breach of contract to me, a form of theft in my book. I have no problem with the agents buying a cup of tea, a lap dance or ... from a voluntary supplier. No difference in my book, but theft is THEFT. Ed
ReplyDeleteThe majority of Americans are arrogant, pompous, & disrepectful when they go to other countries forgetting to treat other people with dignity no matter how rich or poor.
ReplyDeleteI remember the movie I saw many years ago "The Ugly American" which brought this to light very well...
Karma will prevail!
Seems like the Secret Service is not even good at keeping their servicing a secret!
ReplyDeleteTurn that around... The women were doing the servicing part of this transaction.
DeleteEveryone - politicians and press included - is making way too much of this! The men involved - Secret Service Agents and Special Forces Soldiers are macho guys with lots of excess testosterone.
ReplyDeleteIf you want a young man to take a bullet - whether it be for his country (soldiers) or for his country's president (Secret Service) - then you need a warrior type guy for the job. Warrior types are macho types and when they have time off - they like to go to bars and get laid! That is the way it has always been - that is the way it will always be!
If we had a bunch of woosies doing the job who went to church on thier down time - that is when I would get worried!
One guy was stupid enough to try and steal sex from one of the girls. Well - maybe he should have to deal with the Columbian justice system.
Leave the rest of them alone! Obama's security wasn't compromised - no big deal!
It might then be good for all humanity to keep your warriors at home in the U.S. as they do not have the respect and dignity for other people be it rich or poor in other countries. I have seen it too many times of the rape, the pillage, the disrespectfulness by Americans abroad towards the people in another country. It is sickening and saddening. Until Americans learn the word humility and to be humble and quit being so arrogant and pompous, then things will get better. The U.S. has been a nation of war since its founding. Today, the U.S. has turned into too much of a police state, whereby neighbors are spying on neightbors, and everyone is sueing each other, not because of the law, but just for money. Something is wrong with that. Back in the 50's, 60's and 70's the Americans did not have this and it was much more of a country of the free and of the brave. The problem I see is that greed and control got in the way. If I am wrong then I am wrong, but standing outside the box and looking in, a person can see so much of what is happening, where someone living within the U.S. cannot see.
ReplyDeleteLet's see, a majority of cultures around the world use abuse to women as a control and humiliation feature besides using them for self centered, cruel satisfaction. It is happening now by non-Americans in several places in conflict as reported by news and throughout history. They have little respect for anyone or life itself at times. I believe many peoples exist in peace/suffering beneath those that control their countries and some behaviors are a result of being treated badly. Greed is a major problem of course and makes things even uglier. Let's hang on to our better ideas. :)
DeleteSee what happens when you put pictures of whores on your blog, James? Shit, it works better than Seinfeld. LOL
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the way people react to prostitution. Really? Pretending it's forbidden and shouldn't exist. Unreal. What a bunch of fools.
DeleteHaha yes! I am surprised at the number of responses!
